Try looking into simple limit/proximity switches that will read different materials (eg metal). Or maybe something like an inducive sensor with PNP N.O. logic (10 -30 V dc).

Parallax makes a light-to-frequency converter IC in a DIP package that has extremely high dynamic range. It's better than a photodiode for applications like this, if you have a microcontroller or the analog design savvy to use its output.

Check out banner for registration mark sensors. I've used these many times to pick up a dark eye spot on a light surface.

If you want something more versitile than that, you may have to go with a vision system.

well, it's up to the TF fans to decide if they like it or hate it, because of it's value just for young kids to play, unrealism and not standing out to the true mythos of the transformers.

Portabella cheese, reindeer, and an old hat - Donny and Bobby had the hardest time carrying the reindeer. They were heavy and had many awkward protuberances that got in the way and wouldn't fit easily through the doorway. The hat was easy. They took turns wearing it. But in a gust of wind, the hat went sailing above the trees and Bobby had to climb the tree to get it back. Donny had a REAL hard time holding up the reindeer single-handed. While he was distracted, the reindeer ate the cheese. rats

Robbie and The Madagascan Foot Fetish and Fossil Modeling Team have been working quite hard on the Tuning Fork problem. The Difficulty appears to be in the Galactic Resonance Coefficient relative to the current limits of technology. Mushrooms and Cheeses, Reindeer parts and the Eye of Neut don't seem to be enough.. An Aluminum Hat and wearing Chicken Toes around your neck may be as good as a good ol' Whack up side the head to solve the problem. Don't Try that one. More Time Will Tell.
